Stumbled across Duffy yesterday thanks to WERS - a great, shining, lasting hope for good music driven radio - and the wonders of Shazam's iPhone app. She's a cutie pie Welsh soul singer, and I learned from her MySpace that she is supporting Coldplay's upcoming date in Boston. Anyhow, she's agot a great, big, soulful voice and I'm liking what I've heard thus far.
Thanks to Wendy - be sure to check her out and add her to your feed, bookmarks, whatevs at We Came to Make Party - for sharing this. Originally posted via Beatportal.
Check it out here. I must confess this is too computerized for me. I guess I'm a new school old school kind of electronic music fan.
Also on the techno end of things, those of you in NYC should be checking out the Minitek Festival this weekend. They've worked hard to bring a European class music festival to NYC, and have an amazing bill of underground dance talent booked, including the above referenced Richie Hawtin, Francois K, MANDY v. Tiefschwarz, and many lesser known artists. It's a truly magnificent bill for techno fans, where you can hear some legends and industry luminaries and also check out some outstanding up & coming talent.
Tickets are available at Resident Advisor.
I'm secretly a little sad to be missing out on this. :(
'Net radio station Pandora, whose music genome project sought to create the most comprehensive music database of all time, which allows listeners to create customized radio stations by matching up new songs and artists with what the user likes to listen to, may be folding. A Washington Post Article quoting founder Tim Westergren states that the recording industry has doubled the amount of royalties internet radio stations are required to pay to artists and copyright holders, and that that figure now represents about 70% of Pandora's operating revenue, whereas satellite radio pays half that amount and traditional radio pays nothing.
This screams, once again, of old music industry model profiteering tactics being employed to shoot artists, independent labels, and, ultimately, the industry itself in the foot. Doing away with an amazing technologically based site like Pandora that provides invaluable exposure for artists large and small would be a real tragedy, especially as they have been doing the right thing and paying royalties all along. The message then becomes, play by the rules, and we'll just try to squeeze you for every cent we can with no regard for the good your business can do for our clients and our industry. Sad, stupid, and typical.
Great little project here, based around the concept of those sweet mixtapes your flames from youth made for you when they loved you so much they just had to spell it out with other people's lyrics.
Why the f not? Listening to any legitimate reasons, fire away.
I really enjoy the musical musings over at XLR8R, and if you enjoy haute cutting-edge hipstrological beats of a generally electronic and ironic t-shirt fueled nature penned about but uber-informed cyber inflected music geeks, you probably will too.
Their podcast is pretty sweet, somes are better than others, but I usually give most of them a listen and like what I hear. If you cast pods, subscribe via itunes or go here if you use another pod reader.
This week's focuses on NY artists, and was a thoroughly enjoyable little listen to some of the stuff coming out of our fair city these days. I especially dug the Eliot Lipp track and subsequently stumbled across his electro MP3 blog from which I shall surely comb some awesum.
Grab the MP3 here or visit the podcast page to stream it. Enjoy this bit of musical awesum.
